1 Zoë Hall BFA: Essay

Zoë Hall
Visual Communication Emphasis

Scott Adams said, “creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep”. I embrace creativity whole heartedly; I go throughout my life making mistakes and dictating which ones are art. My work has been based on the ideal that everyone see’s things differently. What may seem beautiful to me, may be horrendous to another. My work tends to take on multiple aspects of ‘darkness’ describing the world in a way that represents the beauty in gloom. I am influenced by darker themes and color schemes but do not limit myself because design is meant to reach out and touch all walks of life. Design is an experience. It creates a new way of seeing things and makes room for each mind to wander.
The artist that has most recently affected me and my design progress has been Joshua Smith (Hydro74). I discovered his work on Tumblr and was astounded by his use of illustration and design. His technique is phenomenal and depicts a mystic sorrow that utilizes posterization. His profile describes a background reflecting a history of abuse, neglect, and the understanding that life is what you make it. I always intend to look forward in life and use my past as inspiration in my coming works. To evolve into an artist that creates not only to produce desirable work, but to create pieces of substance and meaning.

As I progress in my University level courses, I intend to create works that are rare. I want to perfect my technical skills and create unique works that have my own distinctive flare. I know that there will always be room to improve, grow, and reach full potential. I have not come close to unlocking my mind or skills. I am prepared to step forward into the BFA program and fully envelop myself in all aspects. I am determined to succeed and learn, I want to improve myself and my craft.
